Shiwa Kennels is dedicated to the breeding and raising of Tibetan Spaniel dogs in China. Our kennel is the first known registered kennel in China for preserving and breeding Tibetan Spaniels with the Hong Kong Kennel Club. We strongly believe in educating China and the Chinese people in preserving their role in the history of China and the Tibetan region. |

Tibetan Spaniels are dogs native to Tibet, Bhutan, Northern India and Western China. Traditionally they were thought to be playmates for the monks in the Tibetan Monasteries throughout the area. The Tibetan Spaniels or Tibbies, as they are known, are unique in that they have use of their front paws. It is thought that they were used to spin the prayer wheels for the monks at the Temples, as watchdogs on the roof of the Temples to watch for strangers, and to help keep the beds warm for the monks. Today they can still be found in a few monasteries and homes in this region where they make wonderful companions. |

In times past, a person could not buy a Tibetan Spaniel as the dogs could only be given to you by one of the monks at the Temple. In the early 1900¡¯s, approximately only five dogs came out of the Tibetian Area and most of the dogs throughout the world were bred from these five dogs. It is for this reason that Shiwa Kennels is dedicated to finding and locating purebred Tibetan Spaniel dogs in China and Tibet. We hope to strengthen the blood lines of these dogs throughout the world. There are breeding risks with this, as we are generally not able to locate a full documented genealogy, but we believe the risk far outweighs the benefits it brings to the breed of these dogs. |

Tibbies are very playful by nature, and this is especially true of the native Tibetan Spaniels. They like their toys and they like to play. My dogs like to play catch and to have the ball bounced and then they run to get it and bring it back. They are excellent watch dogs for their size. They do not just bark to bark or bark at the wind, but bark to alert when something or someone is coming. As part of their watch dog personality they are not always friendly to strangers since they are very loyal to their families. |
